Bruce McLaren (NZL) and Chris Amon (NZL) Ford GT40 Mk II take the chequered flag to win just ahead of Shelby American Inc. team mates Denny Hulme (NZL) and Ken Miles (USA) Ford GT40 Mk II.

Cars are briefly five abreast at the start of the race as Ken Miles's Ford (no. 1) is passed by John Whitmore's Ford (no. 8), Mike Parkes' Ferrari (no. 20), Jo Bonnier's Chaparral-Chevrolet (no. 9) and Bob Bondurant's Ferrari (no. 18).

Jochen Rindt rides on the front as the North American Racing Team celebrate victory with their Ferrari 250LM driven by Rindt, Masten Gregory and Ed Hugus. It was the first international race victory for Goodyear tyres and the last, to date, Ferrari outright victory at Le Mans.
