Gilles Villeneuve (CDN) stunned the F1 fraternity on his GP debut when he qualified his McLaren M23 in ninth place. He would have finished in the points but for a faulty water temperature gauge that cost him a two-lap stay in the pits. He finished eleventh in what would be his only race for McLaren.

Pole sitter Jim Clark (GBR) Lotus 33 trails at the back of the field on the rise from St Devote at the start of the race when he found himself stuck in first gear. He recovered to be running third when a rear suspension failure brought him to a halt at the end of the sixty-first lap.
